Apartment Renovation with secret door bookcase

Winner of the NKBA Spatial Design Award 2018

Ever since I was a small child I have always wanted a secret door
— The Owner

The brief for this Auckland apartment was to create a multipurpose room that could be used either as an office or a bedroom in an existing alcove in the corner of a large open plan living space.

The existing alcove served no purpose and had become a storage area.

A large bookcase was also required to house books & memorabilia, along with a kitchen in need of a remodel.

It was important to the client that all the elements within the space were cohesive, so we used the same Red Cedar veneer in the kitchen also incorporating it into the bookcase design.

The alcove already had door access to the hallway and bathroom, and it made sense to create a room behind the bookcase with a secret door.

Walls were removed around the kitchen making the space open plan and creating a breakfast bar area that all integrated into the living room.

Cabinetry is finished in a satin Lacquer with Caesarstone benchtops.

This project won the NKBA Spatial Design Award in 2018.
